He asked me to pop up a few photos, so in the spirit of silly shoes, here they are with an action shot of the calligae at the Pas d'Arms:

I'll leave it to Blayney to add comments on his experience in making these.
Welcome to my A&S blog. There will be more things than just shoes here, but it is hard to go past a pair of silly pre-1600 shoes

Steel cap is 18G steel, patterned by moulding some aluminium foil over the end of my foot then cutting splits to flatten it for the pattern. Originally inner was stitched to the cap but the stitching cut through almost straight away so now they are rivetted using some 1.4mm flat head nails.
I've fought the Pas and a demo in these boots without the steel cap being attached and while it rotated it was still survivable. I've yet to try it out with the cap rivetted on.
The hobnails give great grip on grass and dirt and are quite comfortable. But on hard surfaces they can skid a bit and the hobnails press noticeably into my foot. They were also a bit short shanked for the leather thickness and some have pulled through the upper.
The caligae went to war for the first time. Apparently they need some refinement.
Total damage;
*Lost two hobnails (saw one that fell out, it had clenched sideways)
*Front of right sole detached from upper.
*Got blood blisters under both big toe nails after fighting Saturday afternoon war and pick-ups. Probably due to constant bumping of steel cap onto tip of nail. Most likely will lose at least the left nail ;( Time to make new steel caps that are less moulded.
