Calligae for SCA Heavy Combat

Blayney recently made these calligae (Roman military boots) with some modifications to suit SCA heavy combat. They are not as open as normal calligae and he intends to make an insert with a steel cap to protect his toes.

I must say they look way cool and are a great improvement on the army GP look.

To give credit where it is due, the caligae and steel cap inner were inspired by Sir Corin who has been wearing a version of these for a year or more.
Also, I finally got a chance to use the hobnails I bought 7(?) years ago.

And now I've made the steel cap and inner, what was the first thing I D'oh-scover? Of course the steel cap is bigger than my foot, so the nicely fitting-to-foot sandals don't fit the larger steel cap so well. Oh well, they still work adequately, and rather than putting the steel cap inside the leather inner (making it even bigger), I made it a feature so the cap is sitting shiny and proud.
(Don't worry skirt and kilt wearers, it's not that shiny).
Now to work out how to make the upper and tongue not make squeaking noises at every step.
